"In France, cooking is a serious art form and a national sport." - Julia Child
***** May 29 *****
The only mishap of the trip occurs after lunch. We had stopped for a picnic lunch on our way to Carcassonne and then afterwards the bus wouldn't start. Poor Philippe tried to fix it, but a replacement bus has to be called. We lose a few hours, but at least there was a pretty canal and the weather was pleasant. Both Julie and Philippe kept their cool and soon we were on our way.
Carcassonne is a medieval walled city and dates from the 13th century. We tour the Chateau and then meander around the cobblestone lanes. The crowds have died down by the end of the day and it feels like we have the city to ourselves. We all meet back up for a group dinner at La Cotte de Mailles. I really enjoyed the hearty cassoulet that is local to this region. Finally Julie leads us on a night time walk so we can enjoy this beautiful city illuminated by floodlights.
